ABOUT

Swarm Gallery is a contemporary art space in Oakland, California that blends a traditional gallery, artist studios, and curatorial services. Swarm opened in 2006 under the direction of Svea Lin Soll and has become a hallmark of the city's burgeoning arts scene. The gallery exhibits a broad range of artwork by emerging and established artists, including painting, works on paper, sculpture, video and site-specific installations.

Svea Lin Soll (Director/Owner) is an artist, curator, and overall enthusiast for the Bay Area art map. She studied photography and dance in Mexico before deciding to settle back to the Bay to pursue curatorial work. Before opening Swarm Gallery, Svea was the Director of Exhibitions at Pro Arts (Oakland, CA), Art Director for Tea Party Magazine (Oakland, CA), and an Archivist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (Washington, DC). Svea serves on the Alameda County Arts Commission and is a core member of the art collective Quorum San Francisco (www.quorum-sf.org). She holds a Masters degree in Museum Studies from John F. Kennedy University.

Robin Ward (Gallery Associate) is an Oakland artist who explores new places whenever she can. Her creative interests revolve around the invention and curation of worlds by means of costume, architecture, performance and film. Robin was brought on board at Swarm to help with the commercial aspects of the gallery as well as public outreach and event/project coordination. Her work experiences include stints at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, the Long Now Foundation in San Francisco and the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur. An Aberdeen, Washington native, she holds a BA in Studio Art from SF State.

Michael Thurin (Gallery Associate) is an experimental photographer, videographer, and hopeful art historian. His area of interest largely lies in the gray area between photography, video, and performance, as well as the discrepancies between figuration and abstraction, and constantly relates art to a wider, socio-cultural-economic conversation. Michael joined Swarm as an intern during the summer of 2011 and has since been promoted to a staff member, specializing in curatorial and sales support. Michael is a graduating senior at San Francisco State University, earning a dual BA in photography and art history.

Kate Kuaimoku (Gallery Associate) is a printmaker, fiber artist, and framer by trade. A former Washingtonian, she has a fondness for nature and spends her free moments as a wanderlust. Her artistic interests lie in the investigation of the organic, line and form through multiple disciplines. Kate was brought on board at Swarm to help with Artist Relations, Press Support, as well as Exhibition Installation for the gallery. She holds a BA from the University of Washington, and is a former Seattlite who now resides in San Francisco.

Jane Elliott (Gallery Associate) is an Oakland artist whose creative ventures include film, animation, music, graphic design, 3d modeling, landscape design, writing, photography, welding and woodworking. When she's not taking things apart and reassemling them in her studio, Jane keeps both Swarm's physical and virtual space running like a well-oiled machine. Her specialty is building, installation, and simply solution seeking.
