CODE-SWITCHING

October 20 - November 18, 2007
Reception for the Artists: Thursday, October 25, 2007 6-9PM

Laurel Roth: Cheap Thrills, Drugstore Miscellanea

Linguists define "code-switching" as an alternation between two or more languages within a single conversation between people who have one or more language in common. What this means for most of us is that we participate in, and practice a type of verbal syntactic shape-shifting, frequently changing terms of speech and expression to accommodate the fluctuating needs of discourse within different social and cultural interactions. Often an unconscious act, code-switching is used for many purposes, including protection, identification, recognition, approval, and control.

With this exhibition, Quorum artists address these aspects of code-switching, exploring when and where the switch occurs and why the switch happens.

Participating Artists | Susannah Bettag, Jordan Essoe, Rodney Ewing, Raymond Haywood, Andy Diaz Hope, Andrew Junge, Tania Ketenjian, Paul Madonna, Praba Pilar, Michele Pred, Laurel Roth, Douglas Schneider, and Harry Siter.

Quorum San Francisco is a collective of Bay Area artists, curators, writers, and gallery owners dedicated to generating arts discourse, and transforming that dialogue into action. Past projects include "Blood for Art" at SCOPE, Miami (2006) and "Code-Switching" at Red House Gallery, Venice, CA (2007). www.quorum-sf.org

Days and Occasions
Installation by Rodney Ewing

Artist's Statement: How do we live? We exist simultaneously between seconds that can be apocalyptic and graceful, minutes that are mediocre, and hours that stand still. We rest on legacies of unsettled boundaries and stolen territories. Our identities have been mistaken, assumed, and in some cases, purchased. History records these occurrences, outlined in ink, pressed between pages in books, placed above us, and out of reach. But this tradition cannot truly document our experiences. We are flesh and bone, and our memories and stories beloved.

In his installation, Ewing has recorded certain experiences as they occur between the seconds, minutes, hours, and days. The title of this work "Days and Occasions" is borrowed from a collection of poems by Octavio Paz.
