Statement

Growing up as a Mormon in Utah I was taught to be prepared for the Apocalypse, I was sure I wouldn’t live to see adulthood.  The end of the world was always “nigh at hand”. It is encouraged by the church to have a years supply of food storage in your home in preparation of any apocalyptic happenings. However living in the shade of the Rocky Mountains I felt somewhat protected from this impending doom.

In my early 20’s I moved from Utah to Boston and suddenly the protective mountains of Utah were replaced with daunting skyscrapers. These buildings looked like they could come crashing down with the slightest provocation. It was then that buildings and the city became an acute apocalyptic metaphor for me in my life. Focusing on the apocalypse also allows me to address issues of utopia, utopia building and dystopic visions of the future.

I find inspiration from sources that range from Byzantine painting, Soviet Constructivism, and El Greco but most of my ideas come from direct observation of the way architecture interacts, overlaps, dominates or is dominated by nature.

However, this is all a meditation for me as I work. It is something that plays in the back of my mind allowing me to work intuitively with the landscape and architectural forms.  My work lets me play out all of my fascinations from architectural spaces, dystopic visions of the future and my personal faith and doubt.
